The Collaborative Way Event
Updated: Dec 11, 2019
Elmdale celebrate their 50th Year and hosts sold out event ‘The Collaborative Way’.
On the 22nd November 2019, Elmdale hosted ‘The Collaborative Way’ in collaboration with Colchester Institute.
The sold out event was received well by attendees who arrived in mass at 8am for the networking breakfast. Global brands also attended the exhibitor marketplace where attendees had vast opportunities to talk about products and network.
Brands such as 3M, ESAB, Lorch, Nederman, Miller, Hypertherm, Abicor Binzel & BH Tungsten Grinders.
Students from the college were also given access to the event where they could see demonstrations of the CoBot in action and speak to the exhibiters.
The event was opened by Assistant Principle of The STEM Innovation Centre, Adam Ward.
Mr Ward went onto talk about how the college has developed over the past few
years, the collaboration with Elmdale to house the welding CoBot and the importance of education to support the future of industry in the region.
Commercial Manager, Tony Hewitt then welcomed attendees on behalf of Elmdale and posed questions which helped develop the framework of the event.
Managing Director, Peter Elms and Director, Simon Elms spoke about the History and Future of Elmdale.
Presentations on Health & Safety, Innovation & Technology from Industry Leaders!
Neil Rutson, Regional Channel Manager for 3M presented the latest in Innovation on behalf of 3M.
This included highlighting 1/3 of products 3M sells today did not exist 5 years ago! Innovative products like the G5-01 welding helmet and the Cubitron grinding discs were also used as an example of innovation within 3M.
Bob Stacey, Former Chairman of the AWD and Current MD of Lorch discussed technological
advances in the way in which we weld. He explained the history of welding processes and products that were available.
Mr Stacey then went on to elaborate on how the CoBot can help businesses in their
productivity and production needs.
Health & Safety
Our final speaker, Paul Rowlands, Chairman of EMADA & MD of Nederman, went on to discuss the latest in HSE regulations with regards to the extraction of welding fume. He emphasised how important it is to seek help, not just from Nederman, but any recognised provider in general as the risks welders face if not prevented are not to be taken lightly.
Mr Rowlands explained that there are currently 12,000 lung disease related deaths every year estimated to be linked to past exposures in the workplace and how appropriate RPE and LEV can minimise the risks.
Attendees were then split into two groups, TIG & MIG and had 40 minutes to watch live demonstrations of the CoBot in action as well as demonstrations of other Lorch automation products in the workshop.
Whilst one group went down into the workshop, the rest stayed in the conference centre to take advantage of our supply partner marketplace.
Our Commercial Manager, Tony Hewitt left these words to summarise the event:
We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from so many of our customers and suppliers following the collaborative way event, both on the day and since. By working in partnership with Colchester institute we have all been able to successfully deliver an event that has captured the attention of business’s in our region and demonstrated to them how technology and innovation can be part of their strategy to develop.
We would also like to thank all of supply partners who attended and helped to allow the event to run as smoothly as it did...
Thank you for today, we all found it constructive and presented well. We liked the ease of programming the Lorch Cobolt welding package and the way our fabricators can freely adjust the placement of the arm and torch to suit the specific work piece, referred to as the Free Drive function.
